Getting There: Hooker Valley Track Trailhead
By Car:
If have a car or rental car, the nearest major town to Mount Cook is Twizel. You can reach Twizel by car from various cities in New Zealand, including Christchurch and Queenstown.
From Twizel, follow State Highway 80 (also known as Mount Cook Road) toward Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. The road offers scenic views and will lead you to the village of Mount Cook.
The Hooker Valley Track trailhead is well-marked and starts from the White Horse Hill Campground area
By Bus:
There are no regular direct public bus services to this route. It is possible to book a number of private shuttle buses such as Cheeky Kiwi Travel and Intercity Buses if required.

The Hooker Valley Track is an easy short 10km flat walk which is enjoyable for people of all degrees of fitness and families of all ages. It is a well maintained track and crosses three swing bridges on the route to Hooker Lake and Aoraki/Mt Cook.
Please note this track is VERY busy and popular given its relative ease and the stunning views it offers, I highly recommend going either very early in the morning or very late in the evening in order to miss the throngs of people that pass through during the day.

Where to Stay Nearby
I camped at the DOC White Horse Hill Campground, which costs $18 per night in summer. You can book online in advance or book on site (however, on site booking will incur a $10 surcharge). This large campsite is fairly busy due to its popularity but is well serviced and is the perfect location for the start of the Hooker Valley Track and Mueller Hut track.
Other options for accommodation include hostels and BnBs in Aoraki/Mt Cook Village such as the YHA Hostel Mt Cook.

Mueller Hut Hike is another excellent hike in Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park. It can be completed as either a long day hike or an overnight hike. This is a tough steep climb with over 1000m elevation gain but the views are well worth it.
Ball Hut Hike
Ball Hut hike is a lesser known but beautiful hike in Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park. It is a challenging 19.6km return hike with multiple diversions throughout the hike due to previous avalanche damage to the route. The terrain is difficult at times with rocky sections and passages with rope required. It should only be attempted by experienced hikers.

The remote location and pristine skies around Aoraki/Mount Cook make it a prime spot for stargazing. The Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, encompassing the national park, is one of the best places on Earth to witness the brilliance of the night sky, making it a haven for astronomers and astrophotographers.
