Kepler Track: Day Hike to Luxmore Summit

Introduction to Kepler Track

The Kepler Track, one of New Zealand’s Great Walks, is a renowned hiking trail located in the breathtaking Fiordland National Park on New Zealand’s South Island. This world-class track offers adventurers the opportunity to immerse themselves in the pristine wilderness of Fiordland, showcasing some of the most stunning natural beauty that New Zealand has to offer. The track’s name pays homage to the famous astronomer Johannes Kepler, and much like its celestial namesake, the Kepler Track takes hikers on an unforgettable journey through a landscape that seems almost otherworldly.

Unfortunately, like most Great Walks in New Zealand, spaces on the Kepler Track book out very quickly each season. If you are one of those last minute folk like me, then I recommend the day hike to Luxmore Summit as your best substitute. This hike still offers wonderful views of the Kepler Range, as well as Lake Te Anau from above.

Getting There: Trailhead

There are two options for this day hike. You can start at Kepler Track carpack (5km drive from Te Anu) or you can start from Brod Bay.

Starting from Brod Bay is my preferred option as beginning from the carpark adds a 6km flat walk to Brod Bay on to an already long day hike without adding major enjoyment value.

You can catch the Kepler Water Taxi for a 15 min ride across to Brod Bay. They depart at 830, 930 and 1030 and cost the $25 NZD each way. The return times can vary depending on the demand on the day.

Trail Overview including Trail Difficulty

Difficulty: Easy-Moderate
Time: 6-7hrs
Distance: 28km from Brod Bay
Elevation gain: 1300m
Type of trail: Out and Back

Although this is a long day hike, it is relatively easy. The trail begins by winding up through a forest covering in beard moss on many well graded switch backs. Once you ascend above the treeline, you are greeted with amazing vistas of the surrounding mountain range. The track meanders on the Luxmore Hut where you can break for a snack and some water and spy the cheeky Keas if they are are out to play.

Onwards from Luxmore Hut, it is a about another hour to climb up to Luxmore Summit

Where to Stay Nearby

I stayed at Te Anau Lakefront Backpackers which was a friendly place with lots of similar likeminded hikers around.

Additional Activities Nearby

Milford Track

An iconic hike and the most famous Great Walk in New Zealand, this world-famous track guides adventurers through a pristine wilderness of ancient rainforests, cascading waterfalls, and dramatic fjords. I’ll discuss my journey through the Milford Track on a next post soon

Milford Sound or Doubtful Sound Cruise

Both options are amazing! Milford sound offers more dramatic sheer mountain faces, multiple stunning waterfalls and the iconic Mitre Peak. Doubtful Sound is a more remote and tranquil fjord, accessible by boat across Lake Manapouri and then by a short bus ride over Wilmot Pass. This isolation contributes to a sense of pristine wilderness, with dense rainforests, serene waters, and a quieter, less crowded atmosphere.

Routeburn Track

Another of the Great Walks beginning from the Fiordlands, Routeburn track is one of my absolute favourite, offering magical views of the remarkable Harris Saddle and Key Summit.
